PHOENIX — Salt River Project announced Tuesday it will convert the coal-fired Coronado Generating Station to run on natural gas.

The SRP board of directors approved ceasing coal generation at the Arizona plant by the end of 2032. SRP said the conversion to natural gas is planned to be completed by 2029 and could save customers $300 million compared to building a new facility.

“Converting the Coronado Generating Station to natural gas provides the best option to support our customers and the surrounding community," SRP General Manager Jim Pratt said in a statement.

SRP officials said the conversion is the "lowest-cost option" to ensure the plant in St. Johns can serve more than 150,000 homes.

The decision from SRP comes as the Trump administration has begun to order coal-fired power plants to remain open. In April, President Donald Trump signed executive orders intended to help boost the coal industry, according to the Associated Press.
